Let’s Write Together

Writing workshops for schools, organizations, and events.

Workshops for Writers at Every sTage

Writing is one of the most powerful tools we have for making sense of our stories, sparking creativity, and connecting with others. My poetry workshops are designed to be welcoming, generative spaces—whether you’re brand new to writing or an experienced poet looking for fresh inspiration.

Each session blends playful prompts, guided writing time, and optional sharing in a supportive community. No pressure, no perfection—just a chance to show up, explore your voice, and surprise yourself with what ends up on the page.

Topics

This is a selection of topics I have taught but the possibilities are endless if you have a topic you’d like to collaborate on!

  • Introduction to Slam Poetry

  • Women & Femmes in Poetry

  • Re-Storying Your Journey

  • Writing Observational Poetry

  • Living and Contemporary Poets

  • Generative Revision

  • How To Submit Your Poems for Publication

  • Make It Gay: Queering Cliches

  • Poetry for Mental Health

  • And more!

What to Expect

My workshops are built on the belief that poetry isn’t only for academics or professionals—it’s for anyone who wants to use language as a tool for reflection or play. Each session is designed to balance creativity with accessibility. A typical workshop includes:

  • Warm-up prompts to loosen up your creative muscles

  • Readings for inspiration from contemporary poets

  • Reflection and discussion to spark new insights

  • Guided writing time with space to draft your own work

  • Group sharing for those who’d like to read aloud

There’s no homework, no pressure, and no wrong way to do it. Just a space to experiment, create, and grow.

About Abby

I’ve been teaching poetry workshops in Kansas City since 2018 when I joined the team at Poetic Underground. As our program director from 2019 to 2023, I oversaw our workshops and personally taught our monthly revision circle workshop.

I’ve taught workshops at Center High School, Gilda’s Club KC, and for NoDivide KC’s Queer Narratives Festival.

In 2025, I became a certified facilitator with NoDivide KC’s Bicultural Poetry Program for my commitment to creating safe and inclusive spaces for artists of all levels to grow and learn.
